"Mare Nostrum" -- Most Delicious Spot !
by Roger & Rosana Jones
(San Miguel)
Sardinian Chef Guilia Alfio Maievi & his Mexican wife, Brenda, have recently graced our town with the opening of their humble new San Miguel restaurant "Mare Nostrum".
My family & some friends met them for the first time last week and were pleasantly blown away by this most unusual and delicious spot. We started with the fried calamari and shrimp salad, prepared in a most unusual fashion that we all loved. The assortment of homemade raviolis--wild mushroom, duck and spinach, prosciutto, pine nuts and cheese--caused us all to applaud the chef.
For desserts we tried a fried puff pastry stuffed with cheese and smothered with warm honey and a tiramasu that caused more applause and a proclamation that it should be called "Better-than-Sex Tiramasu." It was that good!!
Business was slow except for one other table. The people there told us they'd earlier announced that San Miguel de Allende would never have a good pizza place. Happy were they to proclaim that "Mare Nostrum" were the new owners of the title "Best Pizza in San Miguel." This was their third trip there and the place had only been open a week. The Pizza, that's what I'll try next !!
Please enjoy this new San Miguel restaurant and you'll also enjoy the very reasonable prices. You can find Mare Nostrum at Umaran #56. It's open Wednesday-Monday 1:00 to 11:00pm. Telephone (415) 152-7420
